Protect yourself from fraud
Your security is a high priority for us, especially as we see an unprecedented increase in fraudulent activity. Scammers are getting very clever in deceiving people, but we can defeat them together if we are extra vigilant, aware, and cautious. We've listed below a few of the common scams our experts have identified.
Types of scams
Submitting fake claims
Remember to always be careful about securing and protecting your personal information. We’re seeing a rise in scammers trying to submit fake claims or change policyholder bank and contact details. They obtain your information and get claims paid into their bank accounts created in a client's name. You can avoid becoming a victim of this activity.
- Avoid sharing or exposing your personal or policy information. Carefully destroy or shred any old policy documents, letters or statements. Scammers have even resorted to going through rubbish bins to find discarded policy documents. To keep all confidential information secure and private, opt to receive your policy documents electronically via email or the Momentum App .
- Keep track of any changes made to your policy. Momentum will always notify you when we change your details. Check your emails and SMSes notifying you of updates on your contact or banking details and contact us if it isn’t you transacting with us .
- Monitor your claims to verify your claim submissions. If you've been notified of any claims you're unaware of, contact your financial adviser or product contact centre
Things to look out for
Criminals come up with new ways to steal your money and identity every day. Here are a few things you can look out for to ensure your safety.
- Emails asking you to confirm personal information, such as passwords, personal pins or your ID number. This one should always be a huge red flag.
- “Business” emails sent from public email domains. Another red flag.
- Emails using generic greetings such as “Dear Sir” or “Hello dear” instead of your name.
- Unexpected emails from unknown or even legitimate-looking sources, prompting you to click on a link or attachment.
- Poorly worded emails. Pay as much attention to grammar as you would the spelling.
- Always check that the URL provided matches the actual domain.
