The Momentum Fund Orphans and Vulnerable Children HIV/AIDS Programme

The United Nations Programme on HIV and Aids (UNAIDS) has estimated that there were 1.4 million South African children orphaned by HIV/Aids in 2007 alone. These children are more likely to face poverty, ill health and inaccessibility to education.

Through its Community Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) HIV/Aids Programme, the Momentum Fund supports projects that provide care for HIV/Aids OVCs through community-based initiatives. The Programme supports alternatives to institutional care for children who have been made vulnerable or orphaned by the HIV/Aids pandemic.

These children are often looked after by their grandmothers. Their communities also provide support to child-headed households. The objectives of this programme are to support:

  • Sustainable and integrated systems of care for OVC that ensures that the children are receiving proper care and support
  • Programmes providing integrated services for OVC, including their care-givers
  • OVC programmes that aim to increase access for services to children.
